At Valle Cultural Center, flokk & fjell was commissioned to develop a site-specific artwork with an integrated acoustic function. The project was based on the desire to create something more than traditional sound absorption, a solution that also conveys belonging, identity and local anchoring.
The installation has been developed and produced in close collaboration with the local community. Throughout parts of the design and production process, students from Valle Skule have actively participated and left their mark on the expression. The material is local wool, processed with traditional techniques, and continued into a modern context.
The finished artwork stretches over 17 meters in width and 1.5 meters in height, executed as one continuous surface without joints. The composition is inspired by the landscape of Setesdalen, where dark areas represent mountains and lighter areas represent sky. The colored details, developed by the children, add an abstract layer of narrative – as references to people, animals and life in the valley.
The result is a holistic installation that combines acoustic performance with a strong visual expression. The project demonstrates how tailor-made solutions can create space for ownership and participation, while also giving traditional craftsmanship a natural place in contemporary architecture.
